Edward was born in June 1875 in Aspull.1  Edward's father was John Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Heald.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Mary Leigh. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Richard, Samuel, Henry, John, Mary, Maria, Elizabeth, Sarah and Ruth.  He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.

‌Edward and Elizabeth were married in a religious ceremony on November 17th, 1900 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton) by Curate S Proudfoot and witnessed by Henry Shambley & Sarah Ann Mather.2  The family line is yet to be completed.
