Robert was born in November 1809 in Withnell and his baptism took place on November 5th, 1809 in Brindle.1  Robert's father was Jonathan Mather and his mother was Catherine Fielding.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Esther Mason. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, John, Alice, Martha and Esther.  He was the oldest of the six known children. He had three half-sisters named Sarah, Catherine and Sarah.  He died at the age of 21 in June 1831 in Wheelton.  He was buried on June 19th, 1831 at St. Andrew (Leyland).2 3
