Richard's father was James Mather and his mother was Ann Riley. His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Mary Cunliffe. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Robert, Thomas, Susannah, Mary, Mary, Sarah and Jane. He was the third oldest of the eight children.
