Jane was born in December 1862 in Chorley.1  Jane's father was James Mather and her mother was Ann Riley.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Mary Cunliffe. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Richard, Thomas, Susannah, Mary, Mary and Sarah.  She was the second youngest of the eight children.
