Richard's father was William Mather and his mother was Alice Ashton. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named John, Henry, Samuel, Joseph, Edwin, William, Arthur, Alice and Ann.  He was the oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 59 in April 1899 in Prestwich.  He was buried on April 13th, 1899 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).²
