Ralph was born in August 1766 in Heath Charnock and his baptism took place on August 31st, 1766 in Rivington.1  Ralph's father was James Mather and his mother was Esther Mason.  His paternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and Ann Anderton. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Robert, James, Jonathan, Ann, Sally, Betty and Ellen.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 51 in June 1818 in Withnell.  He was buried on June 13th, 1818 at St. Andrew (Leyland).2
