Peter was born in April 1826 in Billinge and his baptism took place on April 13th, 1826 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  Peter's father was John Mather and his mother was Sarah Anderton.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Houghton. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, James, William, John, Elizabeth, Maragret, Sarah and Mary.  He was the oldest of the nine children.

‌Peter and Mary were married in a religious ceremony on February 1st, 1847 in Wigan.2   They had a son named John.  The family line is yet to be completed.
