John's father was John Mather and his mother was Elin (Ellen) Shaw.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Rawlinson. He had three brothers and three sisters, named William, Peter, Richard, Alice, Elizabeth and Peggy.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 77 in May 1842 in Winwick.  He was buried on May 8th, 1842 in Winwick.¹
