Paul was born in 1881 in Chorley.1  Paul's father was Robert Mather and his mother was Jane Caldwell.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Mary Cunliffe. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Harold, Sarah, Lily and Florence.  He was the third oldest of the six known children.
