Nancy was born in 1839 in Whitefield and her baptism took place on December 8th, 1839 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1 2  Nancy's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Alice Whitworth.  Her paternal grandparents were Jesse Mather and Hannah Emmerson. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Jesse, Richard, Eliza, Margaret and Mary.  She was the second oldest of the six children. She had two half-sisters named Sarah and Elizabeth.
