Mary was born in August 1839 in Breightmet and her baptism took place on August 7th, 1839 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Mary's father was John Mather and her mother was Hannah (Ann) Dearden.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and <unknown>. She had two brothers and a sister, named William, William and William.  She was the second youngest of the four children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named George and Sarah.
