Marjorie's father was Sir William Mather and her mother was Emma Jane Watson. Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Amelia Tideswell. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Colin, Grace, William, Norman, Loris, Alice, Florence and Dorothy. She was the second youngest of the nine children.
