Joseph was born in 1778 in Tyldesley and his baptism took place on June 21st, 1778 at St. Stephens (Astley).1 2  Joseph's father was William Mather and his mother was Alice Aldcroft. He had a brother and two sisters, named Edward, Betty and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
