Joseph's father was Joseph Mather and his mother was Sarah Rostron.  His paternal grandparents were Solomon Mather and Martha (Matty) Ramsden. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Solomon, Richard, William, Ellen and Martha.  He was the third oldest of the seven children. He had three half-sisters named Ellen, Ann and Jane.  He died at the age of 51 in October 1886 in Walmsley.  He was buried on October 16th, 1886 at Christ Church, Walmsley.³
