John's father was James Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betsy) Broom.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Martha Bleakley.  John Mather and Jane Welsby were his grandparents through his father's adoption. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Charles, Henry, Martha, Nancy and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
