John was born in August 1826 in Billinge and his baptism took place on August 13th, 1826 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  John's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Anne Gaskell.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Betty Anderton. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Edward, Ellen, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
