Henry was born in September 1817 in Billinge and his baptism took place on September 7th, 1817 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  Henry's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Anne Gaskell.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Betty Anderton. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Edward, John, Ellen, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the oldest of the six children.
