John's father was William Mather and his mother was Martha Barlow. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Richard, Thomas, William, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth and Jane.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 46 on August 10th, 1883 in Wigan.²
