John's father was James Mather and his mother was Alice Collinge. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Luke, Moses, David, Leah, Sarah and Lucy.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 32 in February 1819 in Middleton.  He was buried on February 13th, 1819 at St. Leonard (Middleton).²
