John was born on August 26th, 1828 in Radcliffe and his baptism took place on October 12th, 1828 at St. Mary (Radcliffe) conducted by Curate Samuel Johnson MA.1 2  John's father was Miles Mather and his mother was Mary Hugganson.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Melling. He had a brother and two sisters, named James, Mary and Isabella.  He was the oldest of the four children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Benjamin, James and Mary.  He died at the age of 51 in November 1879 in Radcliffe.  He was buried in November 1879 in Radcliffe.3 4
