Miles' father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Melling.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Pendlebury. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, James, Peter and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the five children.  He died at the age of 75 on September 12th, 1877 in Radcliffe.  He was buried on September 15th, 1877 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).^2 3
