Jane was born in June 1853 in Farnworth.1  Jane's father was Henry Mather and her mother was Margaret Wolfendale.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Hardman. She had two brothers and a sister, named John, Thomas and Betsy.  She was the third oldest of the four children.
