James' father was Nicholas Mather and his mother was Alice Earnshaw.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Pomfret. He had two brothers and four sisters, named William, John, Sarah, Margaret, Jane and Nancy.  He was the third youngest of the seven children. He had a half-sister named Mary.
