Ernest's father was Isaac Mather and his mother was Amelia Beever. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Mary Ann (Martha) Jane Bolton. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Fred, Florence and Lizzie. He was the second oldest of the five children.
