Ellen's father was James Mather and her mother was Martha Austin. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Brabin. She had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Elizabeth, Ann and Mary. She was the third oldest of the six children.

  In 1869, Ellen Ann Mather (31) of Breightmet married Richard Crompton at Ainsworth Christ Church. Ann (sister) was her witness..
