Ellen's father was William Mather and her mother was Mary Warburton. Her paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Betty (Elizabeth) Barlow. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Martha, Richard, James, John, Samuel, Elizabeth and Mary. She had an adopted brother named Thomas. She died in June 1851 in Bury.²
