Alice's father was James Mather and her mother was Alice Hartley.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Sutcliff. She had a brother and four sisters, named Wright, Hannah, Betsy, Mary and Emma.  She was the third youngest of the six children.  She died at the age of 2 in 1843 in Bolton.¹
