Martha was born in 1859 in Aldford. Martha's father was Charles Manning and her mother was Emma Edge. Her paternal grandparents were John Manning and Betty (Elizabeth) Edwards. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, Charles, William, Elizabeth and Mary. She was the second youngest of the seven known children.
