John was born in 1854 in Aldford.¹ John's father was Charles Manning and his mother was Emma Edge. His paternal grandparents were John Manning and Betty (Elizabeth) Edwards. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Charles, William, Elizabeth, Mary and Martha. He was the fourth oldest of the seven known children.
