John was born in 1832 in Ashton-under-Lyne.1  John's father was John Lees and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Buckley.  His maternal grandparents were John Buckley and Mary Hirst. He had four brothers and a sister, named James, Joseph, George, Josiah and Susannah.  He was the third youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 85 in 1917.
