Emma's father was Joseph Lee and her mother was Mary Ellen Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Robert Mather (Cunliffe) and Alice Heaton. She had three brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Robert, Albert and Emily. She was the oldest of the five children.
