Rachel was born on December 8th, 1786 in Horwich and her baptism took place there on January 15th, 1787 conducted by minister L Redmayn.1  Rachel's father was John Knowles and her mother was Jane Thomason. She had six brothers and three sisters, named James, Samuel, Thomas, Mathew, William, James, Sally, Hannah and Bella.  She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
