James' father was Peter Jones and his mother was Elizabeth Jellicoe. His maternal grandparents were Edward Jellicoe and Jane Woodward. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Charles, Ernest, Mary, Anne, Priscilla and Edith. He was the fifth oldest of the eight known children. He died at the age of 66 in December 1960 in Neston.²
