Henry's father was Ralph Isherwood and his mother was Margaret Chadwick. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Isherwood and Margaret Vickers (not Bickerstaff). He had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, James, Ellen, Mary, Alice and Margaret. He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
