Richard was born in 1740 in Blackburn and his baptism took place on October 22nd, 1740 in Samlesbury.1  Richard's father was George Howarth and his mother was Ellen Greenhalgh. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Elis, Ann, Elizabeth, Ellen and Ann.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
