Elizabeth was born in 1738 in Blackburn and her baptism took place on December 31st, 1738 in Samlesbury.1  Elizabeth's father was George Howarth and her mother was Ellen Greenhalgh. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Elis, Richard, Ann, Ellen and Ann.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
