Ellen was born in March 1838 in Bolton.1  Ellen's father was Samuel Horrocks and her mother was Patience Walsh.  Her maternal grandparents were Robert Walsh and Elizabeth (Betty) Mather. She had a brother named Henry.  She was the younger of the two known children.
