Ellen was born in December 1844 in Bolton.1  Ellen's father was John Horrocks and her mother was Esther Crook.  Her maternal grandparents were Christopher Crook and Margaret Donovan. She had two sisters named Alice and Margaret.  She was the second oldest of the three children.
