Thomas was born in 1828 in Sharples and his baptism took place on August 10th, 1828 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Thomas' father was James Holt and his mother was Fanny Hamer. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Robert, Edmund, William, James, Esther and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
