Mary's father was Adam Hodkinson and her mother was Mary Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Jane (Jenny) Sale. She had two brothers and three sisters, named William, Adam, Catherine, Ann and Margaret.  She was the third youngest of the six known children.  She died at the age of 82 in June 1900 in West Derby.³
