Richard's father was James Haslam and his mother was Ann Mather. His maternal grandparents were Solomon Mather and Betty Barns. He had two sisters named Alice and Annie. He was the youngest of the three children. He died at the age of 77 on February 4th, 1953 in Bolton.3

Richard was the manager of a cotton spinning mill and died a wealthy man. He lived with his two sisters. He left over £83,000 to Percy Bowker Haslam, an accountant.
