John was born in June 1851 at Bolton Emmanuel and his baptism took place on December 7th, 1851 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  John's father was John Haslam and his mother was Mary Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Coup. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, Thomas, William, Ellen, Sarah and Mary. He had an adopted brother named Thomas. He had two half-sisters named Ann and Elizabeth.  John Haslam adopted Ann and Elizabeth.
