Allan was born in March 1907 in Burnley.¹

Allan's father was Thomas Hargreaves and his mother was Mahala (Milly) Smith. His paternal grandparents were William Hargreaves and Susannah Slater; his maternal grandparents were John Smith and Mary Ann Harfoot. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Frank, Ernest, Harry, Alice, Clara, Isabel and Lucy. He was the youngest of the eight children. He died as a war casualty, WW2, at the age of 40 on June 21st, 1947.

General Notes
- In 1930, Allan traveled to Quebec, Canada. He recorded his father Thomas Harrgreaves of 21 Lansdowne St, Burnley, Lancs.
  
  Sgt. Allan Hargreaves of the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps son of Thomas and Matilda M Hargreaves died 21-June-1947, aged 40. This is the correct Allan, as he records his brother Frank as NOK on Canadian WW2 service file.
  
  Allan appears to have married in Canada. he had a son Bruce Dexter, born 30-9-1941 in Victoria, BC.
