Peter's father was Squire Greenhalgh and his mother was Esther Isherwood. His maternal grandparents were Benjamin (Bennett) Isherwood and Esther Mather. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, Bennett, James, Elizabeth and Alice. He was the youngest of the six children.
