Thomas was born on December 8th, 1848 in Prestwich and his baptism took place on September 23rd, 1849 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).1 2  Thomas' father was Thomas Gillmore and his mother was Jane C Howarth.  His maternal grandparents were William Howarth and Lydia Whitehead. He had two brothers named John and William.  He was the oldest of the three known children.
