William was born on July 9th, 1796 in Westhoughton. William's father was Adam Howarth and his mother was Ann Aspinall. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Ann, Joseph, John, Adam, Ann, Betty and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 58 in January 1855 in Blackburn.

‌William and Lydia were married in a religious ceremony on January 4th, 1821 at Manchester Cathedral.3   They had four daughters named Elizabeth, Sarah, Jane and Hannah.
