Roger was born in February 1780 in Bolton and his baptism took place on February 6th, 1780 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Roger's father was James Foster and his mother was Margaret Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Jane Holt. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, Richard, John, Catherine, Ann and Peggy.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 72 in 1852 in Chorley.2
