Robert was born on October 16th, 1877 in Farnworth and his baptism took place on December 2nd, 1877 at St. John the Evangelist (Failsworth).1 2  Robert's father was Moses Farnworth and his mother was Betsy Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Hugh Mather and Alice Crompton. He had three brothers and five sisters, named James, James, Abraham, Elizabeth, Alice, Mary, Ada and Jane.  He was the third youngest of the nine known children.  He died at the age of 1 in June 1879 in Farnworth.1
