William's father was John Edmondson and his mother was Rachel Mather. His maternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Sarah Blackburn. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Richard, John, John, James, Thomas, Sarah, Mary and Ann. He was the seventh oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother named John. He died as an infant at 10 months old in December 1884 in Little Bolton.¹
