Hilda's father was William Hawthorne Denton and her mother was Mary Jane Tomlinson. Her maternal grandparents were William Tomlinson and Mary Ann Barnes. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Harold, Wilfred, Arnold, Edith and Irene. She was the third oldest of the six children.
